Floral & Brick is Hamilton’s eco-friendly florist.
What are we all about?
At Floral & Brick we are passionate about making the floral industry more sustainable! We use locally grown flowers and greenery in our design, only work with sustainable mechanics, and we are low-waste. Flowers in and of themselves are not ecofriendly - they are flown into Canada every day from giant industrial farms that spray heavily, clear-cut forests, and don’t regulate chemical use or working conditions. We believe that this not the way it needs to be, but it takes awareness, asking questions, and seeking out local farms.
We also love native plants! As much as possible we include Ontario’s native flowers and foliage in our arrangements. We grow and harvest this ethically and sustainably, never wild foraged, and always leaving most for the wildlife and pollinators.
What is Floral & Brick’s story?
Founder Natasha started out by growing in her backyard and 20 other yards around Hamilton. She was inspired by the vibrant urban vegetable farming community that already existed, and thought hey that could be done with flowers as well! Floral & Brick now has narrowed down to 3 of their own gardens (a bit more manageable!!), but still is all about supporting all small-scale, sustainably minded growers in the area.
Natasha is a flower grower and floral designer who directs the vision of all bouquets and special event florals, and who has meticulously planned to gardens over the last nine years in order to bring unique and fun offerings to the designs. She is passionate about native plants and is currently developing HEATH, a native plant focussed floral design sister brand to Floral & Brick.
What flowers do we work with?
Between April and October our arrangements are made with primarily flowers from our own cutting gardens. We have a garden downtown Hamilton, one in Dundas, and a larger, renaturalized farm just outside Hamilton in Caledonia. We supplement what we grow from smale-scale local farmers that we love and that grow without chemicals.
We are not a traditional florist - in using what is in season we don’t work with roses (except for special events in June when there are local roses) or many other of the common flowers and greenery you may see in the florist shops, the vast majority of which are imported. Our signature bouquets and vase arrangements are “wildflower” style, using a wide variety of small, textural flowers, greenery, and grasses. This is what the garden offers for much of the growing season, so we let nature guide our designs!
At certain times of the year we may have larger local flowers to include:
April-May - double tulips
May - ranunculus
May-June - Peonies
August-Oct - Lisianthus and dahlias
What are sustainable mechanics and low-waste packaging all about?
Low-waste packaging is very dear to our hearts. Traditional bouquet wrapping involves so much paper, plastic and ribbon. Not only that, but that paper is NOT made from post-consumer recycled materials, meaning trees are being cut down to create it.
We’ve kept it simple. Our signature bouquet wrap is 100% post-consumer recycled kraft paper, and we use compostable plastic bags for any water containment.
Our vases have chicken wire within them to hold the stems in our structured arrangements. This can be reused for many years for future floral arrangements, making it much or sustainable than floral foam (made of chemicals and single-use microplastics).
Where can you find our retail bouquets?
You can order flowers for delivery or pickup through our website. We are also happy to announce that you can find small grab and go bouquets on Saturdays inside Dopamine Boutique at 229 Locke Street South! Bouquet pickup for online orders will also be from this location.
